Disaster Response & Recovery

 DISASTER PLANNING

Planning efforts before a disaster occurs save money, time and material. The planning effort can prevent incidents by eliminating hazards. It will also save time and money after an incident because staff will have information and supplies they need on hand. Recovery efforts can begin as soon as the disaster area is declared safe for entry, if the staff has done sufficient planning in advance.

Audience: This workshop is designed for all staff responsible for maintaining the collection.
Topics Covered:
Writing a disaster plan;
What a disaster plan should contain;
How to keep a plan updated;
What makes a plan workable.

DISASTER RECOVERY

Not a question of whether, but when. A disaster, large or small, man-made or natural, will hit your institution. It may be an insidious mold or pest infestation, a broken water pipe, or a major fire. Many materials can be recovered and returned to use, if the staff knows how to handle the situation with the proper recovery techniques.

Audience: All staff members involved in caring for collections, either hands-on or administratively. Attendees should wear comfortable clothes and sturdy, water-proof shoes.

Topics Covered:
Organizing a recovery operation;
Vendors of recovery services: costs and options;
Disaster recovery techniques for a wide variety of materials.
